Bosch is a German electronics manufacturer based in Stuttgart, the same city in which the company was founded by Robert Bosch in 1886. The company operates worldwide with offices across five different continents, including offices in England in Europe, the US in North America, Australia in Oceania, Brazil in South America and India in Asia.
The business operates in a number of different areas but is best known for its range of power tools and garden tools. However, the company started out producing components for car engines, and it was not until 1932 that Bosch made its first power drill. The company remains a major producer of automotive parts and in 2011, in terms of revenues, the company was rated as the number one supplier of automotive parts in the world.
Bosch also manufactures security systems and home appliances, presenting its first-ever refrigerator at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1933. By 1956, the company had produced its 1 millionth fridge. Other appliances produced by the company include washing machines, irons and kettles. A Bosch kettle is equipped with a number of features such as a digital temperature setting and a keep warm function.
The company also made mobile phones for a short period of time, with models released between 1997 and 1999, but has since closed this area of the business. Bosch has a number of subsidiary companies including audio equipment specialists Telex Communications and engineering firm Rexroth.
