About Chests of Drawers
Since Medieval times, chests of drawers have been used in homes as a convenient way of storing household items. These versatile pieces of furniture are commonly found in most modern homes, and feature the same basic construction, but may vary in style, material and size, depending on the preference of the homeowner.
Chests of drawers are typically rectangular in shape and consist of a chest which houses a number of drawer units that are stacked one above the other. They are usually constructed of solid wood, such as pine, oak and ash, but cheaper versions often feature wood veneer or wood effect chip board in the place of solid wood. Chests of drawers vary in size and may include three to seven drawer units. They usually stand on the floor, with the top of the unit reaching waist or shoulder height, if there is enough room space.
Homeowners use chests of drawers to store a huge variety of household objects. Chest of drawers are most commonly found in bedrooms, where in some cases they can be placed beside a bed, thus doubling as a bedside table. In bedrooms, chests of drawers are typically used to store lingerie, clothing, bed linen and other personal items. This multipurpose item is also suitable for other rooms of the house, such as living and dining rooms, where it may be used to store kitchen and general household items. Chest of drawers may also be used to display mirrors and decorative items on top of the unit.
