About Fly Cutters
A fly cutter is manufactured of a body in which one or two tool bits are inserted for milling. As the unit rotates on the machine, the tool bits take a shallow facing cut to remove broad swaths of material and can be used in place of face mills for some applications. Fly cutters are available as individual pieces or in sets on eBay. Each fly cutter accepts bespoke size tools and are not interchangeable with other sizes. Cutters are usually manufactured to fit certain machines, although it is possible to find universal cutters that are adaptable to more than one milling machine. When purchasing fly cutters, it is important to be sure the cutter will fit the machine and meets the manufacturer?s standards for the individual machine that you are using. For the do-it-yourself miller, fly cutters are the accepted standard for milling and facing. Once you have your new cutter, start milling on that new exciting project.
