Often called the 'Queen of Pop', Madonna's career spans several decades, during which time she has released a series of successful albums and sold millions of records worldwide. In addition to her pop career, Madonna has performed as an actress, directed films and written children's books. Music career Born in 1958, Madonna began her career performing as a dancer in New York, before forming her own rock band. She released several singles in 1982 and 1983, which launched her into the pop chart. Her first album, called Madonna, was released in 1983, but it was not until after her second album, Like a Virgin, was released in 1984, that she achieved worldwide success. Her later albums include True Blue, Like a Prayer, The Immaculate Collection and Erotica. Madonna's continual music success has been the result of her exceptional ability to reinvent her music and image, whilst constantly pushing the boundaries of music and music videos in the process. Film career Madonna has performed in a number of movies with varying critical success. In the 1980s she starred in Shanghai Surprise and Who's That Girl. Madonna achieved critical success and won a Golden Globe Award for her role as Eva Peron in the film musical Evita, which was released in 1996. She has appeared in a number of other films, including Dick Tracy, Swept Away and Desperately Seeking Susan.
