Merlin, also known as The Adventures of Merlin, is a fantasy drama series based on the legend of King Arthur and the wizard Merlin. The programme was created by Johnny Capps, Julian Jones, Jake Michie and Julian Murphy. In the lead role of Merlin, the show stars Colin Morgan, with Bradley James as Prince Arthur Pendragon (and later King Arthur), Angel Coulby as Guinevere and Anthony Head as Uther Pendragon, Arthur's father. The story centres on young wizard Merlin, who has recently relocated to the kingdom of Camelot. On arrival Merlin discovers that he must protect Arthur Pendragon and eventually helps the prince to power.
The programme originally ran from September 2008 until December 2012, airing on BBC One, with series four and five also broadcast on BBC One HD. In its original run, Merlin totalled five series, with each individual episode of the programme lasting between 45 and 50 minutes. To accompany the series, items of official merchandise were produced. Merlin spin-off products include the official DVD, encompassing the entire series, released between 2010 and 2013; four soundtrack albums featuring music from the original Merlin score; signed Merlin photographs of the actors to have appeared in the programme; and an official magazine, which contained Merlin based articles, puzzles and comic strips.
