Shoes were first invented as a means of protecting the feet from rough terrain and the weather. Over time, shoe fashion has developed and the look of the footwear is often as equally important as the various functions it performs. There are a wide variety of shoes in production, and shoe accessories can be used to further personalise the appearance of a shoe.
Shoe laces are the most common form of shoe accessory, as well as being the oldest. Leather cord laces were found on a pair of sandals dating back to 7,000 or 8,000 BC, discovered in Fort Rock Cave, Oregon in the US. As well as leather, modern shoelaces are available in different materials, colours and sizes, including extra wide shoelaces and self tying laces. The laces themselves can be customised with open ended charms and beads through which the laces can be threaded.
For shoes with out laces, shoe accessories clips are available. These small clips attach to open parts of the shoe, such as straps and edges. The shoe accessory clip may already be decorative, as with floral or feather bows, or can have an additional decorative items attached to it, like rhinestones or broaches. Rings for high heeled shoes are also available that attach on the heel of a shoe.
