About Wooden Pulley Clothes Airer
Wooden pulley clothes airers hang from the ceiling and allow clothes to dry out of the way. Warm air drifts up naturally, and the airer functions like a clothes line that doesn't depend on the weather, or a standing clothes airer which takes up space.
Ceiling airers come in several variations on the same idea: there are two cast iron metal ends, two pulley wheels, a pulley rope and ideally a wall cleat. Airers are designed to support four to six wooden rails. Built for strength, the traditional design from over 100 years ago has lasted the course and almost all of these pulley airers have a vintage look.
The cast iron ends are offered in a variety of colours with generally matching pulleys and cleats. Colours can be black, white, red, clear-coated cast iron and so on. The wooden rails are generally pine; the pulley rope is generally cotton and 10m long. Care must be taken in buying quality rope which is ideally purpose-made.
It is vital that all the components are good quality because of the heavy wear expected from the pulley clothes airer once installed. It is also important to measure your space and check carefully for the size of rails on offer as these can vary in length.
The cast iron ends tend to be gently rounded with detailed metalwork but there are modern models with all the rails on the same plane and no decoration. It should be a dependable workhorse either way.
