History of Classical MusicMasterworks: The Evolutions of Classical Music
From ancient religious chanting to mainstream musical accompaniment
The term 'classical' is used as a catch-all to describe a diverse range of perennial music that dates back as far as the 12th century beginning with Gregorian chants and other secular music. The de facto Classical period that gave rise to composers Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart, however, emerged between 1750 and 1830. It is characterized by the sonata form of instrumental composition, and is still used extensively today in everything from television commercials to children's toys.
