History of BarbieInspired by a little girl with big dreams in a make believe world
Barbie: A doll that inspires throughout the years
The Barbie doll is the creation of Ruth and Elliot Handler, who were inspired by their daughter as she played make-believe with paper dolls in the 1940s. Ruth wanted to create a doll that looked like a young woman, instead of the infant dolls that were commonly available at the time. The inspiration came to fruition with the debut of the Barbie doll at the American International Toy Fair in 1959. Since then, Barbie has become a cultural icon. The doll's keen sense for fashion over the years was even celebrated during its 50th anniversary in 2009 with a runway show during Fall Fashion Week.
