History of LightingLighting illuminates the past, present, and future
Lighting the way through time
Some of the first flames of light came from handheld torches fueled by ignited animal fat before the Greeks invented basic terracotta lamps. In time, the intensity of light was increased as oil, a new fuel at the time, led to the creation of oil burning lamps. The emergence of gas lighting in the late 1700s revolutionized things as streets and homes became flooded with light. As electric lighting took over in the 19th century and solar lighting has increased in popularity, people now have continual access to light, day and night.
