Following eBay Global tracking from the US to the UK

The 'eBay Global Shipping Programme' delivery system is designed to make it as easy and secure for  eBay sellers to sell in other territories as there own.  Buyers will find that the delivery process tends to be relatively slow  and parcel tracking  rather patchy. However,  I have made several GSP purchases from the US without serious problems,  now spanning  18 months or so. Here's how some more informative and timely tracking data can be collated from outside of Ebay.

First, as a guide of what to expect, I've  pasted here a copy of an Ebay tracking log, which is probably fairly typical. It shows that the parcel was carried by Fedex to the Erlanger Pitney Bowes GSP facility and then by Air France to CDG Paris (some shipments will go Virgin Altlantic JFK to LHR), where it was handed over  to  WN direct logistics, who have contracted 13Ten to take freight  by road to their TPC (The Processing Centre) in Derbyshire. The final legs were covered in this case by My Hermes .

You can access your tracking  info. in 'my eBay'  by selecting the purchased item.  Tracking  updates from  eBay would seem to  have a delay of  up to about 12 hours after the time shown.  Not good, as of course you wont know when the  parcel is actually out for delivery. Better method-  Once the parcel's in the UK,  click the order no. which should by now have appeared in 'My eBay' ,  i.e. LPKENxxxxxxxx  (taking  you to WN direct's website), you should be able to  see your WN reference no. i.e. WNMxxxxxxxxx. Copy paste this into 13ten's website tracking and once underway you will be able to get the most recent tracking info  in about  4 hours  after the time shown. Note that the  universal reference given by eBay i.e. the UPAAAxxxxxxxxx  number appears to be of little practical use (Update Sept. 2016-, it is a valid tracking reference number, see comment by Joe Bloggs. Thanks).

Here's what extra detail of the UK  leg you'd see by going to the 13Ten website and looking at your  tracking there:

Once delivery looks imminent, you can try copying this (you'll have to close the spaces) and your WNM number into your browser address  bar
http :// 13ten-tracking. citipost. co. uk/Home/History?order=WNMxxxxxxxxx
Here's the resulting final two entry blocks and as you can see you get the delivery carrier (Hermes) and a jdxxxxxxxxxxxx tracking number. Now copy your tracking number which follows <jd> , Google your carriers tracking site and paste it in to get real time tracking to your door.

Update .............. 02 August 2017

A front caster wheel  on my ride-on mower came adrift,  finding its way into the cutting deck. As well as new cutting blades, I  needed several US made parts to effect a repair.  The UK agent adds a margin and cuts costs by having most parts zero stock, so I decided that the cheapest, easiest and in this instance - quickest solution, would be  direct from a US eBay seller, even though they send by eBay GSP . The order went in 04 July

Its now about  18 months since I last had stuff come  GSP.  I always found GSP OK, but slowish. The good news this time is that I found it more straight forward to find real time tracking. The bad news is Erlanger, Pitney Bowes is still en route, so it's no faster getting here. This time it came via DHL  and not the usual  'destination carriers' WN logistics and 13ten.

Here's how best to track it:

1.  Once you have dispatch notification, go into 'My eBay' and find the Pitney Bowes UPA***********  number and copy it. Go to the Pitney Bowes Website and paste this number in to get their tracking.
2.  The UPA********* number may expire once the parcel arrives at Erlanger Pitney Bowes, If so now get the UPB********** number from my Ebay and again copy/paste across .
3.  Once departed the GSP,  the Pitney Bowes tracking provides links to the 'destination carriers'.  this time it was  DHL e commerce to Hatfield, Herts and Yodel from Llandudno.

To continue:  my mower parts arrived by DHL within ETA, but of one the items was missing!
The cardboard box looked tatty and felt a bit underweight. Should I have signed 'unchecked' or even refused delivery? Well, I grumped a bit, but signed and accepted the delivery. In the event, I didn't even have the patience to take a photo of the unopened parcel. Once opened and the shortage established, I did take however take photos of everything including a gap in the  bottom flaps of the box, where the not very sticky sellotape had come away.  I've always found eBay OK to deal with when things go wrong,  so to save time, I first re-ordered the missing item from the same seller and then opened a case with eBay, attaching the photos. I won't apportion blame, but normally it takes at least a week to get refunded, however  the seller responded by also raising a case and presto, I got refunded next day!

The replacement item  arrived today 02 August
