Additional Information
This German film is a gritty, devastating retelling of the battle for Stalingrad during World War II, in which more than a million and a half soldiers lost their lives. Told from the point of view of the German soldiers, who were under orders to neither retreat nor surrender, this film realistically portrays the brutality of combat.

An interesting historical film about a major battle in WW2.

This is an interesting but very dark film. Like all foreign films, the body language is different to films made in English speaking countries and must be taken into account. It certainly made a big impression on me.

  • Most critical review

A harrowing War Film dubbed into English for some reason.

This Movie was eagerly awaited, following the success of Das Boot. The story follows the lives of German soldiers fighting in the city of Stalingrad during World War II. There are some stunning set-piece sequences, which show the horrors of war. Sadly, this DVD is the English Dub Version, which makes for a less impressive viewing experience. I recommend the original German Language format, but this version is worth a look if you don't like subtitles.

  • Life on the Russian Front and all its horrors

This film is from the producers of Downfall, the very vivid depiction of Hitler's last days and the fall of Berlin. Stalingrad is equally engrossing but I would not call it 'entertaining'. It shows life on the Russian Front as being savage/cruel/personal scores being settled and how a young officer is totally disillusioned by how the war has progressed and its impact on him and his men. An excellent film - highly recommended.

  • Captivating

Great film covering the Russian Germany War in the frozen former St Petersburg Lenigrad. It showed the Germany command using their soldiers as collateral damage and expendable vessels knowing they couldn't possible win out numbered out gunned to die in the weather off -30 temperatures
