    In this book, Iain Rice presents a series of designs for installations of different sizes. The smallest design requires only three shelves in a standard bookshelf for implementation, the largest completely fills a medium-sized room. Common to all plans is that the author has given a lot of thought not only to the layout but also to operation and rolling stock. For each design there is a track plan and a beautiful three-dimensional drawing, which also shows exactly the possible layout. In addition to the plans, the author also gives general notes on layout construction, which he has also beautifully illustrated. Rating: Beautiful.     Offering alternatives to the 4x8 sheet of plywood

    This 2000 publication that I have just purchased (preowned) in 2021 is undoubtedly the best Kalmbach book that I've seen. Many Kalmbach books are simply collections of previously published magazine articles with common subjects and a brief introduction. This book by Iain Rice has a 12-page introduction followed by 16 small, smart and practical track plans that don't require a full basement or attic. Not only did Rice write and edit the text, but he drew all of the colorful layout illustrations and prototype train artwork. For anyone wanting to build a model railroad, but without a lot of space, this publication is a great source of inspiration, whether copied exactly or modified.

    “Small” is in the eye of the beholder. I was looking for real small, like 2x4 or coffee table size. This planbook didn’t come close. Disappointed, but I’ll get by. And now I’m off to the internet…
