Ernest Thompson's adaptation of his Broadway play THE WEST SIDE WALTZ casts stage and screen legends Shirley MacLaine and Liza Minnelli in a heartwarming tale of loneliness and female friendship. MacLaine stars as Margaret, a lonely widow who uses her sharp wit and tongue to ward off any attempts at human interaction. Her only friend is violin-playing next-door neighbor Cara (Minnelli), who Margaret tolerates only because she accompanies her on piano while playing waltzes. The women's solitary existence is suddenly broken by the arrival of Robin (Jennifer Grey), a young divorcee and aspiring actress who inspires Margaret and Cara to rediscover the joys of life, love, and friendship. Kathy Bates has a cameo performance.

Item looked new and played as new UNTIL the last 10 minutes when disc was flawed and the ending of the film was spoiled. Most of the DVDs purchased here were fine, just not this one

Sad waste of Shirley, for one thing. And of viewer's time, for another.
Seems to be an earlier vehicle for Lisa Minnelli when young and perhaps starting into movies, must be well before "Cabaret." Perhaps hope was (by someone in power) that if LM was given a boost by Shirley MacLaine the whole thing would magically fly, even with that plot. IMO, it didn't work. Great interiors, tho, and the brief city street scenes (tho muchly at crosswalks) are .....interesting...., and the homeless (pushed at us as adorable, eventually) supporting actress was/became well known. But this "nice" story is not good enough to have Shirley in it, nor does the character merit her talents. I quickly gave this disc away WITH a fitting advisory. No returns, either.

This is a charming, made-for-tv movie. It stars three of the greatest actors of our time: Shirley McClain, Kathy Bates, Liza Minnelli and a fine actor Jennifer Grey really breaks out in this role. I am not surprised, she is the daughter of the great Joel Grey and stars in the classic Dirty Dancing. I enjoyed it very much and am having the girls over for a movie, popcorn and wine night. Great movie for "grown ups."
This is a story that most older people will enjoy. Shirley Maclaine is charming, and everyone else does a great job. The story is good, and the setting is very appealing. It's one of those that I will watch over and over... like going to visit a friend.
