    Elegant and overly complex

    Shimano engineering is peerless, unsurpassed. Yet it seems this rear derailleur is over-engineered. The Microshift Advent 9 can reach a 42 cog without a B2 link. But Shimano is forward thinking, and it makes sense to move to direct mount. I appreciate the external clutch adjust access, and the cartridge bearing jockey pulleys. The huge plastic clutch lever seems silly. The flaw for me on this derailleur is the light action spring. The pull ratio seems to be a linear 1.1, same across the gears. Making it compatible with 9 speed (4mm pull shifter) or 11. But like "light action" derailleurs of the past, this one is promoted as shifting with less effort. As parts wear this will mean with less accuracy. The fix for light action was to install a heavier spring. That would help here. But when ...

    XT worth every penny

    I went in knowing what to expect as this would be another XT derailer to install on another one of my bikes I was updating to 11 speed. Got a surprise when I got my derailer in the mail, as I received a free upgrade to a XTR. Which preforms the same at no added cost to me. Never ran anything more expensive than a XT because when you smoke one on a rock or during a crash, you wont cry...too bad about it. Derailer comes with a clutch, which I don't need to engage as I run a Carbocage chain guide system for the front chain ring. Haven't dropped a chain yet, broke a couple, but never derailed a chain up there. Item arrived out of the factory packaging, which does keep the cost down I am sure. But was well packaged for shipping.

    The XT system is amazing!

    Shifting is incredibly smooth, and QUICK. The derailleur quickly moves between gears and features a quick lock system to stop your chain from bouncing off during "bumpier" rides
