When Redmond Barry (Ryan O'Neal, trying desperately to maintain an Irish brogue) becomes jealous of Captain Quin's advances on Barry's beloved cousin, he challenges the man to a duel. Winning the duel, young Barry is forced to leave his home and his mother, and off on his adventures he goes. He meets thieves, lonely soldier brides, Prussian army leaders, and British widows, inventing new stories about himself at every turn of the road.BARRY LYNDON is lush and magnificent, sparkling with color, every frame reminiscent of the finest European art. The blues of the Prussian army uniforms and the reds of the British contrast sharply with the majestic green land and mountains in nearly every background. Kubrick often begins a shot close in, then zooms out to reveal the beautiful natural landscape and ornate rooms surrounding the now seemingly insignificant characters.     Somewhat Forgotten and Obscure Kubrick Masterpiece

    Stanley Kubrick started his professional life as a photographer. So, image content was very important to him as a director. This really shows in Barry Lyndon; the framing of the shots is fantastic. The story and script is also noteworthy. I think I'd put this on my list of 100 favorite films.

    A movie classic

    Barry Lyndon is a classic costume drama; great story, great characters, especially if you are interested in 18th Century history. The cinematography is magnificent. Kubrick chose to film much of the movie by natural or candlelight and it provided great ambience to the interior scenes. The locations are outstanding. Ryan O'Neal and Marisa Berenson performed at the top of their game, and the supporting cast was superb. Barry Lyndon was an engaging opportunist who wormed his way to great heights and then was knocked to the lowest depths in revenge for early misdeeds. His rise and fall produce a great movie; Thackery would have approved.

    Kubrick's Painting

    I'm an artist, and I could have paused this film at any point, and painted what I saw. Kubrick gives us a flow of images which create a vivid sense of the 18th century. The actors and characters are a part of the paint that Kubrick applies to his canvas, and they serve their purpose. For those familiar with the book by Thackery, you'll recognize the author's reverence for the 18th century, and the work of Henry Fielding and his novel, Tom Jones. The novel, and this film are a dark homage to the tale of Tom Jones.
