    Because it is soft and flexible if forms a good seal.

    At 232K miles on the 4Runner it was time to change the PCV valve during a valve cover gasket change so a new valve and grommet were ordered. The old grommet was so hard and brittle that it was destroyed attempting to remove the old PCV valve and would have NEVER made a good seal around the replacement valve. ALWAYS purchase a new grommet when replacing a PCV valve and you'll be very happy you did...or very unhappy you didn't!
