There are several things you need to take into account before purchasing a craft pottery wheel. Electric pottery wheels
Electric pottery wheels are driven by a motor and the strength, or horsepower, that the motor gives out will determine the maximum amount of clay you can put in the centre. Usually, electric pottery wheels come in different horsepowers ranging from 1/4 hp up to 1 hp.
Some electric 1 hp pottery wheels can centre up to 150lbs of clay at a time with no trouble. So if you're pretty confident and want to make larger pots more quickly go for a more powerful motor. Smaller motors are also good, but you might find that the wheel can slow down if you put too much pressure on the wheel-head.
Manual kick pottery wheels
Treadle pottery wheels are more traditional and mean you can connect more with the clay using your hands without the use of modern technology. You are also free to fully control the speed of the wheel, as the power comes from your own movements. As the horsepower comes from the power in your legs and the weight of the wheel, the heavier it is the more torque it will have, and the longer it can stay spinning.
Mini pottery wheels
Mini pottery wheels are more for fun than actually making lots of items. They are more affordable than a standard sized pottery wheel but are ideal just for making smaller pots. They're also very portable, so are great for kids and easy to carry in much smaller carriers, plus they take up little storage space when not in use.
