This is most often outdoors, especially at high altitudes, where the UV-absorbing atmosphere is thinner; and over long distances, such as marine scenes. It can show up as a bluish color cast with color film, or it can cause a low-contrast haze that diminishes details, especially when viewing far-away objects, in either color or black-and-white. Ultraviolet filters absorb UV light generally without affecting light in the visible region. It is important to distinguish between UV-generated haze and that of air-borne particles, such as smog. The latter is made up of opaque matter that absorbs visible light as well as UV, and will not be appreciably removed by a UV filter.The UV Protector shields lens from dust, moisture, scratches, and breakage.

    Tiffen 77mm UV filter

    The less I have to clean the front of my lens the better I like it. So, if I’m not using a yellow, orange, red or polarizer filter over my lens, I generally place a UV filter over the lens to protect it from finger prints, dust and other contaminants.

    Great Lens Protection

    There is a raging debate in the photography world as to whether UV filters are important or not. Whatever side of the aisle you fall on, you can't deny the extra added protection it adds to your lens. Tiffen filters have always been my go to filters. They are at a great price point and the quality is good. Due to the digital age, some will say that UV protection is not important any more...as digital sensors do a pretty good job of filtering out that light bandwidth...however, it doesn't hurt to have that extra protection in front of your lens!

    Well made filter, backed by good name

    I selected this filter to protect the front element of my Canon EF 24-105mm f4L lens. I was immediately impressed by the clear optics and the way the filter threaded onto the Canon lens. It was smooth and easy to turn, which tells me that the filter threads were made with precision and care. All too often, I have bought other filters that feel rough to turn when I have attempted to thread them onto the lens. The overall fit and finish of this Tiffen filter didn't let me down.
