About this product

Product Information

From bestselling author Amanda Owen come more tales of life at Ravenseat, the remote Yorkshire hill farm she shares with husband Clive, eight children and 900 sheep. In her new book she describes the age-old cycles of a farming year and the constant challenges the family faces, from being cut off in winter to tending their flock on some of Yorkshire's highest, bleakest moors - land so inaccessible that in places it can only be reached on foot. Writing with her trademark warmth and humour, Amanda takes us into her life as nine-year-old Miles gets his first flock, Reuben takes up the flugelhorn and she gives birth to a new baby girl. She is touched by the epic two-day journey of a mother sheep determined to find her lamb and gives a new home to an ageing and neglected horse. Meanwhile Clive is almost arrested on a midnight stakeout to catch a sheep-rustling dog and becomes the object of affection for a randy young bull. Funny, poignant and charming, this is a must for anyone interested in the countryside and those who farm it. PRAISE FOR AMANDA OWEN Amanda Owen is like a breath of fresh air. Amanda's life is one of old-fashioned values, hard graft and plenty of love. She, like her life, is extraordinary. Ben Fogle This is the captivating story of life on the highest farm in the north Yorkshire Dales . . . the mum-of-eight told the story of leaving behind an urban life in last year's The Yorkshire Shepherdess. This book is even better. Natasha Harding, Daily Mail

The author sets out to tell her life as it developed from leaving school to becoming a good sheep farmer and married to a Dales farmer.

A Year in the life of a Yorkshire Shepherdess by Amanda Owen was educational about life in the Yorkshire Dales, farming with lots of personal interesting touches. It was both entertaining and well written as well as being an easy and enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

    • A good read!

I am currently reading this book - the content is so refreshing - a lovely family to boot - living in an inhospitable part of the country where life can be tough - each chapter is a delight!

    • Another excellent book from Amanda Owen.

Another brilliant book from Amanda Owen, I just love hearing about her busy life on the farm and particularly about her large family and the part they all play in the day to day running of the farm. So refreshing in this time of computer games and mobile phones.

    • Excellent, easy read.

This is the third Amanda Owen book I've read and throughly enjoyed each one. Easy to read. It's wonderful how they work together as a family, especially involving the children, and they are obviously a very caring couple who look after their animals as well as they do their children.

    • A fantastic read with lots of everything relating to human and animal natures.

A great insight to the workings of a successful farm. I loved the way the children loved their way of life with the animals and as a family. There was great sensitivity when relating to the inevitable losses and sadness which I did appreciate. The many very humerous situations made me laugh so much.
