About this product

Product Information

In 1965, 400 American troops faced an ambush by 2,000 enemy troops in the Ia Drang Valley (also known as the Valley of Death), in one of the most gruesome fights of the Vietnam War. WE WERE SOLDIERS is a detailed recreation of this true story: of the strategies, obstacles, and human cost faced by the troops that participated. The story focuses on the lieutenant colonel that led the attack, Hal Moore (Mel Gibson), and a civilian reporter who accompanied them, Joseph Galloway (Barry Pepper), as well as a number of other soldiers who were involved. This is an unusual Vietnam film in that it also shows the North Vietnamese perspective on the battle; their leader Lieutenant General Nguyen Huu An (Don Duong) is depicted as a brave soldier and smart commander. And in addition to the many gory battlefield sequences--which seem to have been influenced by SAVING PRIVATE RYAN--we also see how the carnage of war affects those left behind, the soldiers' wives and children. Ultimately this is a moving anti-war film, which, by sticking close to the true stories of real soldiers, very effectively brings home the overwhelming horror of war.

Tactics & determination can turn defeat into victory.

Beginning on November 14, 1965, Lt. Col. Moore led the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in the week-long Battle of Ia Drang. Encircled by enemy soldiers with no clear landing zone that would allow them to leave, Moore managed to persevere despite being significantly outnumbered by North Vietnamese Army (NVA) forces that went on to defeat the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry only two-and-a-half miles away the next day. film shows the battle of Ia Drang without any pomp or grandure. It's shown in a way that conveys the savagery, fear, courage & heroism in the face of impending defeat. Sometimes it's sound tactical decision making & sheer force of will that decides the outcome of a battle, not numbers. A well researched & documented film showing the ...

  • Epic Film, Epic Cast

An epic film with an all star cast which tells of the other side of warfare.....the ones left at home. But, that's a simplistic statement, as it goes much farther. Yes, tis a war movie, and there's more than enough action for any testosterone addicts. Mel GIbson and Madelyn Stowe are boxoffice draws, But, I would suggest watching it more than once, as then the Other actors' characters will capture yer attentions and hearts. One of my fave roles for Berry Pepper, and Greg Kinnear NAILED his part, too, with quiet but solid perfection!! If'n yer one of the cult who swooned over "The Thin Red Line," you'll likely appreciate this one, too!

  • Best, most accurate war movie I have ever seen. I started watching movies when in elementary school. I started 1st grade in 1948.

Probably one of the most accurate war movies ever made. Lt. Col. Hall Moore led the new 7th calvary(helicopters were the new horses) into a 3 day and night battle against some of NVA regular solders many of which had been fighting for decades. General Hal Moore was the active consultant on the film and insisted that it be as close to what he and his men dealt with. The movie shows us one of the few times a call for "Broken Arrow". This meant that the NVA was so close to the US troops that they needed the closest(to them) air support possible. Broken Arrow was a call for every available airplane and helicopter to bomb everything immediately in front of the US troops. Very dangerous but exceedingly effective. This call helped Moore and his troops to gain the upper hand against overwhelming ...

  • Everyone should know.

This was actually a copy for a young relative, a Generation-X-er. This is an historically accurate account of the real battle, and brings alive the reality and ugliness of war; but somebody has to be 'the soldiers' sooner or later...or the nation dies. Utopia is a fantasy, and running off to Canada just isn't practical. And I wanted her (and her kids) to know what we dealt with 40-50 years ago. Two thumbs up on this flick!

  • first rate depiction of war

One of the best war movies ever, based on a true story with an admirable commander and extremely brave soldiers; good balance of battlefield and home front scenes; excellent picture of the war in Vietnam that very few Americans understand now or understood at the time; the movie is first-rate
