Synopsis
In the segregated US of the mid-twentieth century, African-American travelers could have a hard time finding towns where they were legally allowed to stay at night and hotels, restaurants, and service stations willing to serve them. Victor Hugo Green published the first annual volume of The Negro Motorist Green Book, later renamed The Negro Travelers' Green Book. This facsimile brings you all the listings, travelogues, and advertisements aimed at the Black travelers trying to find their way across a country where they were so rarely welcome. Also available: The Negro Motorist Green-Book.

This is a great reprint of something which was as important as a roadmap. It’s great reading even today and puts light on America’s not so talked about recent history. Great conversation piece also.

"Don't leave home without it!"....and sadly we're not talking just traveler's checks.

Hard to believe that American blacks actually needed a book like this to travel with some level of comfort throughout the United States. This book is proof that the 1950s weren't all that pleasant for many American citizens. This "Green Book" copy is a fairly good reprint of a book that's probably very hard to come by as an original printing. It has travel tips for blacks and includes the hotels, restaurants and other places state-by-state that didn't discriminate against them. Highly recommended.

  • Most critical review

    Edition quality is TRASH

This book is legendary and deserves to be printed in a way that reflects its legacy! The fact that this book is still being sold today is a testament to its importance in American History. I really hope some publishing company picks up the ball and prints it properly because this edition (2017, printed by SnowballPublishing) is really badly printed. Barely legible. Feels and looks more like a zine than an actual book.

  • A vital piece of American history

Fascinating to step back in history to the year before I was born ... and see how horrifically racist the Western, Central and Southern U.S. truly were. We must never, never lose sight of this truth! And we must never repeat it. The Green Book bring clarity to who we were as Americans. We should be ashamed. Having my own copy will always remind me.

  • Sad but accurate

Accurate facsimile of original green books, however print quality is very fine and difficult to read without magnification.

  • Truly apart of history!

A must have to see what African Americans dealt with while traveling and what few choices they had.
