Synopsis
If you've ever wanted to learn the secrets which turn a tap handle into a mysterious woman from the sea, which transform plastic aquarium plants into subterranean roots stretching far beneath the known world and those which can make an icy cave from a bourbon box, then prepare yourself for inspiration that will have you checking your trash bin, twice. In "Secrets of Rusty Things," renowned assemblage artist Michael DeMeng guides you down the intuitive, curious and often rock-strewn path of an artist's creative process, where illusions are just as important as any other aspect to the art. You'll discover new ideas of where to look for, not only discarded objects, but new items that you may not have previously seen as having a place in a future work of art. You'll be inspired by ways to add meaningful symbolism to your artworks' stories both through the use of color and shape. And you'll see how an ancient tale can parallel the artist's plight and invoke a new piece of art. From the pondering of each ancient myth and its connection to the modern-day artist, to the gluing together of objects, to the paint that unifies and disguises the original bits and pieces, this is an intimate view into the creative process unlike any workshop you've ever attended., If you've ever wanted to learn the secrets which turn a tap handle into a mysterious woman from the sea, which transform plastic aquarium plants into subterranean roots stretching far beneath the known world and those which can make an icy cave from a bourbon box, then prepare yourself for inspiration that will have you checking your trash bin, twice. • Not a "How To" book

I enjoyed the book. Each chapter is about a specific work of art inspired by a specific goddess or mythological creature. The book is not about how to attach rust to other surfaces although it does mention certain adhesives, and it does touch on what paint to use to make things LOOK LIKE rust or how to make substances look like rocks. The artist tells about his inspirations more than giving a recipe for putting something together. I enjoyed reading about the mythological creatures and how the artist made the image come to life in his own manner. He has favorite images that appear often in his work. DeMeng has a definite style and obviously loves his work. He made me think about the process of inspiration. He gets the inspiration and then goes on the hunt for the pieces to make the ...

  • Not much technique or instruction.

Just a lot of pretty pictures. No "how to" or guidance on how DeMengs art was made. Lots of great eye candy pictures of his work and his thoughts. But if you are looking for a how to book, this is not the book.

  • SECRETS OF RUSTY THINGS, transforming found objects into art

The title is deceiving if you are expecting a 'how to' book on transforming found objects into art. Unfortunately this was how the book was marketed and sold to me. To top it off, the text is rambling and, for me, largely unreadable. So I tossed it into the recycle can where the paper will hopefully eventually be recycled into a better product.
