Disgaea DS is a remake of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and a port of its PSP remake for the Nintendo DS. It is the second port of the original Disgaea. Disgaea DS includes all features added in the PSP remake as well as the ablility to recruit extra characters such as Adell and Rozalin. It uses the Top Screen of the Nintendo DS as map grid in battle. It is also used to display character status screens rather than the Touch Screen. The Touch Screen can be used to select commands due to the new touch buttons added. It can be used to also move Laharl in the Hub World. Disgaea DS also features PvP multiplayer and the ability to sell items to other people. Due to the limitations of the Nintendo DS hardware compared to the Playstation 2 or PSP, multiple aspects of the game were downgraded or removed. There is no voice acting other than the opening cutscene and Next Episode Previews due to the limitations of the DS Game Card's storage size. The BGM has reduced quality due to the DS's MIDI such as no vocals or lyrics in songs. Like the PSP version, the tracks "One with the Stars" and "The Invasion From Within" are absent. The visuals of special skills has been reduced in quality. Most special attacks cause the screen to black out with only the user and enemies affected being visible. The reason is that the DS has limited memory, so it cannot display the entire stage or every sprite at once during a special skill. The story remains the same from the original Disgaea, including all stages and cutscenes. It also retains Etna Mode and the extra stages from the PSP remake.Read full review
Disgaea DS is an enhanced version of the popular strategy role-playing game that was originally released for the PS2 and which later found its way onto the PSP. It maintains the original's light-hearted style and impressive amount of replay value, but also boasts a fresh multiplayer mode, a slew of guest characters, and full stylus controls. The game's difficulty level has also been lowered, which makes Disgaea the most player-friendly it has ever been. Set in the demonic realm of the Netherworld, Disgaea casts you as the young and impetuous Prince Laharl, son of the recently deceased Overlord. Laharl has spent the last two years asleep and is awakened only when his less-than-trustworthy vassal, Etna, tries to kill him. Afterward, Laharl discovers that he'll have to slay any who oppose his claim to the throne to be the new Overlord. Disgaea's turn-based strategy battle system is straightforward, with a moderate learning curve that shouldn't prove too intimidating. The grid-based battlefield is presented on the bottom screen while the top houses a valuable map that marks both enemy and ally units, making the game significantly more player-friendly because it aids in character positioning. Another feature that increases the game's ease of use is the ability to maneuver the camera, which greatly helps in targeting because you're able to get a better view of both the field and your opponents. There's also a very well-integrated zoom feature that enlarges panels to make them easier to select with the stylus, which is a convenience often lacking in most DS strategy RPGs. The game's most striking aspect is its geo-effect system. Geo symbols, which are colored objects that grant special effects to their same-colored geo panels, can significantly alter the battlefield to the point that you can't proceed without dismantling or transferring them. For this reason, you might want to destroy every geo symbol on the map, but the most effective way of doing so, chaining, involves both the transferring and destruction of multiple geo symbols, which can quickly become tiresome and frustrating for beginners. Combos, team attacks, and throwing also increase strategic play and are essential for besting the game's opportunistic AI. You trigger combos by attacking the same enemy in succession, which lets you quickly dispatch foes because it raises the damage rate. You'll also score extra goodies by filling a bonus gauge with each successful combo string. Team attacks, meanwhile, are specials that are initiated when you have characters placed near an attacking ally, and these grant you such a great combat boost if you pull them off consecutively that they're absolutely vital against powerful enemies. Throwing adds a refreshing dimension to the battle system by letting you lift and toss characters; this is useful for accessing hard-to-reach areas and can even be used to manipulate enemies by combining them to create a more formidable foe. Disgaea boasts a remarkable amount of customization and depth due to its item world and dark assembly. The item world encourages you to level your favorite items by clearing dungeon floors within them, which grants you access to the specialist characters inside. Specialists increase the stats of their item depending on their class; for instance, a dietician increases a character's HP whereas a coach increases speed, plus its based off the anime and this game is awesome for rpg fans.Read full review
Disgaea DS is an addicting strategy/RPG hybrid that started its life on the PS2. Thankfully, Atlus decided to port the original title to the DS, and the transition is a vast improvement. The turn-based gameplay seems best suited to a handheld console like the DS, and a slew of new features have been added to the basic Disgaea forumula, like multiplayer and bonus characters. For those that enjoy franchises like Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea is a sure thing. It's relatively simple, fast-paced, and offers dozens of character classes with which to do battle. The only observable fault is that much of the voice-acting and music has been removed or altered from the original title. The story and dialogue hovers between childish and melodramatic, and the awkward humor displayed in the writing is, shall we say, an acquired taste. Still, Disgaea is endearing on a lot of levels, with rock-solid tactical gameplay, fun character designs, and a lot of bonus content. Here's hoping Atlus ports more Disgaea goodness to the DS in the near future.Read full review
AMAZING GAME ON THE D.S. Classical, fun, stimulating, and a awesome story line that appeals to both genders! The game has amazing graphics in my opinion, and just like the game! same voices, music, storyline,so your never short one thing!!!!!!! AMAZING! IF YOU WANT A GAME THAT WILL ROCK YOUR WORLD! PLAY DISGAEA! YOU HAVEN'T LIVED TIL YOU PLAYED IT! I would recommend anyone to try it. Game that never get's boring and something you won't find usually. High ranked game of fun, and so much more to offer. Really Disgaea D.S. is just like the PS2 version, maybe even better because it's now portable!!! There is so much to say about this game I can't place it all! Seriously! Thank you and good night!
A pretty optimized version of the first Disgaea for the DS. I believe it has nearly everything the original PS2 version has and more, with the exception of voice acting and cutscenes in some parts (I'm playing the bonus 'Etna Mode'). The game cartridge can only hold so much memory, so the sounds and graphics are a bit distorted, but is negligible. Has been more significantly rare to get a complete copy these days, so get it while you can.

This game is about the bad guys. You don't play angels, you play demons. It is a very fun game with a ton of custimization! No character is limited to what they can/can't wear. If you want a cleric to have a sword, then go for it! If you want a ninja to have a bow, that too is allowed. It is very fun and if you have someone nearby that also has the game, you can fight that person head-on through wire-less play! It is an exciting game with mulitple endings, all depending on how "demonic" you are!
24 playing hours in to and still have a ton to do. Tou can pick different types of fighter and monsters. After you you beat a monster you can make them. It cost alot at first then if you go back and beat the stage again cost gets lower and lower. Just a great game all around.

The game has a steep learning curve. But it has a beautiful design...something that is rare in the realm of modern gaming. A must have for any fan of Final Fantasy Tactics or Soul Nomad...or anyone who loves RP strategy games.
Disgaea was fantastic on the PS2--my fave tactical rpg game of all time. This port to the DS is excellently done. The game translates so well to the DS you'd almost think it was originally designed for it. Awesome.
I've loved the Disgaea series ever since I played Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for the PS2. It's so awesome how it's the exact same game for a smaller system. I bought it because I wanna play it while I'm on the go! And I wanna play the Etna version of the story. Excellent game!
