Product Information

John Sturges's adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's short novel, often regarded as an allegory of the latter part of the writer's career, stars Spencer Tracy as Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman who has been nearly three months without a significant haul. Heaped with ridicule by other fisherman, he once again pushes off in his decrepit ketch, hoping that this trip will finally bring success. After a time at sea he hooks a powerful marlin that drags the man's tiny craft for a couple of days. Santiago engages in an epic battle with the monster, his hands nearly cut to ribbons as he's pushed to the limit of his dwindling strength. At rest during lulls in this war, he has dreams of his stronger and younger self, only to awaken to reality. At length, through guile, experience, and endurance, he lands the hefty marlin with a harpoon and secures him to the side of his boat. But a new danger arises, in the form of a school of hungry sharks that attacks the boat, attempting to seize his catch. Tracy's work is memorable in this stagy adaptation of the well-loved literary work.

    A Hemingway classic movie I saw as a child which I immensely enjoyed and brought back many memories

    Picture quality is fine but the audio is poor; Volume had to be turned up almost to maximum to hear “normal volume”- perhaps to having been played so much? I. e. “Worn out”?

    Pretty Much All Spencer Tracy!

    Spencer Tracy brings Ernest Hemingway's novel to life in this 1958 movie for which he received his 6th Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The 86 minute movie has Tracy in an Everyman role on the screen for at least 97% of the time as it describes him as an old man whose luck has run out in fishing. And then suddenly, on just another ordinary day a giant Marlin tugs at his line. The battle between fish and man begins. The battle takes the biggest part of the movie. The old man even talks to the fish and compares their lives. In the end, there is no winner. But there is proof that the old man's luck has changed. Dimitri Tiomkin won an Oscar for his music throughout the movie, which highlights the struggle. The movie is beautifully photographed too in living color. The only ...
