Don't let 'Go Set a Watchman' change the way you think about Atticus Finch…the hard truth is that a man such as Atticus, born barely a decade after Reconstruction to a family of Southern gentry, would have had a complicated and tortuous history with race., A deftly written tale… there's something undeniably comforting and familiar about sinking into Lee's prose once again., Lee's ability with description is evident… with long sentences beautifully rendered and evoking a world long lost to history, but welcoming all the same., What makes Go Set a Watchman memorable is its sophisticated and even prescient view of the long march for racial justice. Remarkably, a novel written that long ago has a lot to say about our current struggles with race and inequality., The success of Go Set a Watchman... lies both in its depiction of Jean Louise reckoning with her father's beliefs, and in the manner by which it integrates those beliefs into the Atticus we know., [ Go Set a Watchman ] captures some of the same small-town Southern humor and preoccupation with America's great struggle: race., "Don't let 'Go Set a Watchman' change the way you think about Atticus Finch...the hard truth is that a man such as Atticus, born barely a decade after Reconstruction to a family of Southern gentry, would have had a complicated and tortuous history with race. Synopsis
A historic literary event: the publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the beloved, bestselling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014. Go Set a Watchman features many of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird some twenty years later. Returning home to Maycomb to visit her father, Jean Louise Finch-Scout-struggles with issues both personal and political, involving Atticus, society, and the small Alabama town that shaped her. Exploring how the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird are adjusting to the turbulent events transforming mid-1950s America, Go Set a Watchman casts a fascinating new light on Harper Lee's enduring classic. Moving, funny and compelling, it stands as a magnificent novel in its own right., #1 New York Times Bestseller " Go Set a Watchman is such an important book, perhaps the most important novel on race to come out of the white South in decades... -- New York Times (Opinion Pages) A landmark novel by Harper Lee, set two decades after her beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, To Kill a Mockingbird. Twenty-six-year-old Jean Louise Finch--"Scout"--returns home to Maycomb, Alabama from New York City to visit her aging father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political turmoil that were transforming the South, Jean Louise's homecoming turns bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her close-knit family, the town, and the people dearest to her. Memories from her childhood flood back, and her values and assumptions are thrown into doubt. Featuring many of the iconic characters from To Kill a Mockingbird , Go Set a Watchman perfectly captures a young woman, and a world, in painful yet necessary transition out of the illusions of the past--a journey that can only be guided by one's own conscience. Written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman imparts a fuller, richer understanding and appreciation of the late Harper Lee. Here is an unforgettable novel of wisdom, humanity, passion, humor, and effortless precision--a profoundly affecting work of art that is both wonderfully evocative of another era and relevant to our own times. It not only confirms the enduring brilliance of To Kill a Mockingbird , but also serves as its essential companion, adding depth, context, and new meaning to an American classic., Go Set a Watchman is Harper Lee's earliest known novel. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014,and is now published for the first time. Written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman is set during an era of rapid change and significant progress in Civil Rights legislation, and it engages with questions of racial equality and justice that are still at the forefront of our national conversation.

Got the TV series combat, season 2 volume one from the seller and they shipped it out fast and well wrapped up for the journey. It arrived earlier than listed and in the condition they listed it as being. This is not a series easy to find out side of complete box set yet alone for the great price they sold it for. The seller showed great communication and I'd buy from them again without question. Good series and good seller.

Brilliant first draft that is still relevant 60-plus years later

This is basically an unedited first draft - a time capsule from the 1950s - but it is still better than 95% of novels published recently. The characters argue over topics we’re sadly still seething over today. The characters are vivid and well developed - Atticus is far more complex and stubborn in his ways, though he seems to be seeking common ground with the community, trying to figure out how best to appeal to them. Contrary to over-hyped reviews, the real racists are the boyfriend and the uncle. There are chunks of text the author likely would have reworked/rewritten/omitted, given the chance at a younger age Overall, it is a highly pleasurable reading experience, thought provoking and beautifully written.

Harper Lee's Heirs Probably Wanted More Money

This was obviously a re-worked first draft of To Kill a Mockingbird. There were many rumors that she was having memory problems and people were taking advantage of her in her later years. Harper Lee said several different times that she would never publish another novel after Mockingbird. This one was written in the mid 50s, and she re-worked it into Mockingbird, published in 1960; possibly after suggestions from from her pal, Truman Capote. Both books have semi-autobiographical elements, and several passages of Watchman are verbatim from Mockingbird; the big differences being the time-frame and the personality of Atticus in Mockingbird. If you are a big fan of Mockingbird, and can get a copy of Watchman cheaply like I did(just over six dollars for a hardback, including shipping from ...

  • The Watchman vs The Mockingbird

It's very hard to believe that this book was written before To Kill a Mockingbird. The racial issues in this book are on a first person account, while Go Set a Watchman is on the society of the time as a whole. Scout is having a much harder time dealing with the old South's white vs black attitude than she did dealing with Atticus's defense of a black man accused of a crime he didn't commit. In some aspects Mockingbird presents a more telling version. Although I enjoyed them both, I had a harder time liking the characters in Watchman. I am glad it didn't come out first. If it had I don't think Mockingbird would have been as successful. Perhaps that is why the author held Watchman back for so long.

  • Go Set a Watchman

After having read and loved To Kill a Mockingbird, I don't think this comes anywhere near the quality level of Mockingbird. The depth of characters in Mockingbird is not reflected in this book. While some readers, I have heard, are upset that their image of Atticus is sullied by this book, the book was so different from her first that I see almost no connection between them, despite being set in the same place and with the same characters. While Atticus is now shown to have some attitudes very common to that setting and time in this book, the story was so fragmented with jumps in time and assumptions on Scout's part that I couldn't even finish it.

  • Don’t bother !

Entire book is about the southern culture I grew up in, the daughter comes home from living in NYC and sees it hasn’t changed , her family tries to drag her back in. The last chapter brings Atticus , rarely mentioned all along ) to the fore and tramples what we knew of him in the past . I believe either this book was not written by the author or was changed deliberately by others to sully a main character who served as a means to show us some decency in the world at that time . I think it smells a rat . Waste of paper , ink, money … And not really a credible novel .
