About this product

Product Information

While researching in Nantes, a port city enriched by the slave trade, celebrated French novelist Fabienne Kanor came across a chilling report written in 1774 by the commander of a slave ship, Le Soleil. Captain Louis Mosnier recounted the loss of valuable "cargo" when fourteen African women escaped from the ship's hold to leap overboard rather than face enslavement. Half of them drowned or were eaten by sharks. From this tragic incident, Kanor has composed a powerful, polyphonic novel in which each woman tells her own vivid story. Their disparate lives from differing cultures, conditions, and perspectives intersect through their violent mistreatment, profound sense of disorientation, and collective act of resistance. These intertwined narratives reveal the brutalizing effects of slavery, not only on the victim but also on the oppressor: the master can no more escape its dehumanizing effects than can the slave.

Seller is great and responsive. USPS is awful. They gave my package to the wrong address, it was opened and another expected packaged Blu Ray was opened, lost it original mail packaging, and inserted into this order's package, then put infrpn of my door later that day. Thankfully nothing was damaged. Overall great nostalgic X-men comic, and great repsonsive seller. USPS is the only problem here.

I ordered this book May 14th and didn't receive it until May 28th. I waited 5 days to contact the seller after purchase because they hadn't shipped yet. They thanked me for reaching out but still they exceeded the delivery date. I have never had to wait this long for a delivery. Very poor customer service. Booked arrived in good condition despite inadequate packaging. I will not purchase from this seller again.

Great deal on these books. I was looking for the Penguin Classics editions, specifically. I read that they offer some of the best translations for Dostoyevsky's works. They have been a bit hard to find, so I was very excited when I saw that this seller had two of the books on my list, brand new and for a good price. Seller provided tracking numbers. Shipping was prompt and there were no issues. I recommend purchasing these titles from this seller.
