Dir. Gus Van Sant (Drugstore Cowboy) Starring. River Phoenix (Stand By Me) and Keanu Reeves (Johnny Mnemonic). Co-starring. James Russo and Flea (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers). Gus Van Sant is now an acclaimed and respected film director and it is films like 'Drugstore Cowboy', the Red Hot Chili Peppers's 'Under the Bridge' music video, and 'My Own Private Idaho' that cemented his reputation. 'Idaho' was one of River Phoenix's last films and is arguably his best film. He plays Mike and Reeves plays Scott: two friends who embark on a personal journey each in order to discover their true 'Self'. The film opens with Mike on a deserted stretch of highway. In Idaho. Along this weird and wonderful road trip they encounter all kinds of people and problems. Mike is poor, Scott is rich. They are best friends. They are street hustlers. They are also both messed up. They sleep with men and women for money, although Scott hardly needs to for he will inherit a fortune. Part of their journey sees Mike trying to locate his long lost mother firstly through his older brother (James Russo) and then onto Italy. Things get messy towards the end and Mike finds he has come full circle on a lonely stretch of highway. 'My Own Private Idaho' is an independent arthouse film that has retained its critical acclaim and has since garnered cult status. It marked a major turning point in the career of River Phoenix who would have gone onto star in 'Interview with the Vampire' and who knows where? He had already been nominated for an oscar: 'Running on Empty'. 'Idaho' proved Keanu Reeves could put in a serious performance: he also filmed 'Point Break' that year and would later headline Coppola's 'Dracula'. Genre: Independent Film, Drama. Ghost.
