About this product

Product Information

Akira Kurosawa's stunning reconception of Shakespeare's MACBETH is a dark samurai drama, set in feudal Japan. As the film begins, two soldiers--Washizu (Toshirô Mifune) and Miki (Minoru Chiaki)--find themselves lost in a dense forest during a powerful thunderstorm. Seemingly unable to leave the woods, they encounter a ghostly old woman who predicts that Washizu will soon rise to power. At the goading of his ruthless wife, Asaji (Isuzu Yamada), Washizu embarks on a murderously ambitious path and quickly fulfills the prophecy. However, his ascension is cursed by his brutal actions and soon opposition arises to challenge his blood-stained rule. One of the finest Shakespeare adaptations to appear in any medium, Kurosawa's THRONE OF BLOOD is covered in an entrancingly macabre web. The always-amazing Mifune gives one of his greatest performances as the haunted yet unrelenting Lord Washizu, while Yamada portrays the eeriest version of Lady Macbeth to ever grace the screen or stage. A master of reinterpretation, Kurosawa incorporates strong elements of Japanese Noh drama into the film, and the result adds to the somber and chilling mood. The film's highlight, however, is the tense and skillfully paced finale, which features Washizu literally up against the wall as he faces an army of vengeful archers.

Came quickly, sealed as advertised with no scratches under the plastic wrap. It seems the plastic wrap tore slightly in shipping, however as I was planning to open it anyways this was not an issue for me. It is unfortunate the after the M&A Crunchyroll decided to no longer honor Funimation digital codes, however this was not advertised and was not a major point for me so I do not mind. Overall it came in new quality and I would buy again from this seller!

  • Foreign Film Master Strike Again

Kurosawa has become one of my favorite foreign film makers. Another adaptation of a Shakespeare play ("ran" is also a Shakespeare adaptation). Even set in a different time period and radically different location & culture, it has all of the impact of the original and more. Definitely a favorite.

  • MacBeth in Old Japan

Akira Kurasawa was one of the few geniuses of world cinema. His classic films are too numerous to mention. This film is a retelling of Shakespeare's MacBeth in which we actually see Birnam Wood come to Dunsinane. Highly stylized, evoking images from Noh theatre, this British story is rendered against the landscape of Japan, painted in blood. It's worth whatever it costs.

  • Kurosawa and the Scottish Play

Imagine, if you will, that all the characters in Shakespeare's "Macbeth" have reincarnated into 16th Century feudal Japan -- the drama, the gut-wrenching angst and inner conflict conveyed through simple body gestures and carefully directed movement against a background of eerie fog with magnificent camera angles and the contrasts that black and white film format allows. The costumes and sets do their best to replicate the historical era. Simply yummy. Can't get enough Kurosawa.
