First-person shooter game. Impressive controls, exciting multiplayer, and a dramatic campaign make Call of Duty: World at War a great success. Well-tuned weapons make firefights intense. Add in the engaging multiplayer system and you've got one of the best shooters available for the Wii. In the campaign, you split time between two soldiers in two offensive theaters: the Russian push out of their homeland and into the heart of Germany and the American struggle to obtain the Pacific islands from the Japanese. Each soldier's journey begins at a low point. Weaponless and surrounded by the enemy. The first few levels are difficult as you and your fellow soldiers try to gain a foothold for your country. Later levels have a sense of hard-won momentum as you fight bigger battles and push closer to your enemies' capitals. On the journey you'll travel through a number of well-detailed environments that set an impressive backdrop. Issues: If you use the Wii Zapper you may find that it requires frequent twisting to stay on target. The melee attack is performed by shaking the Remote or hitting the D pad. Shaking shifts your aim causing you to miss your target. The D pad is also used for switching weapons so if you don't hit the button just right, the wrong action will execute. Grenades are mapped to the + button which can be awkward to reach since it is halfway down the remote.Read full review
I bought Call of Duty: World At War for the Wii because I'm an older gamer (44) who just got back into first person shooters marketplace in late 2010 after a long hiatus (remember Goldeneye 007 for the N64?). After getting the new Goldeneye for the Wii in December I added Call of Duty: Black Ops (with head set) in March. That game has the best graphics and sounds of all Call of Duty Wii games but is by far the most difficult -- difficult to the point of frustration. I added the Wii's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex Edition in May and thoroughly enjoy the on-line game play (I don't have time to play the actual adventures of any of these games, so this review is ONLY about on-line multi-player game play.) World at War was released in 2008 but still has enough of a following to have a great on-line deathmatch. I like the World at War game due to its use of circa 1945/WWII weapons -- old time rifles, sub-machine guns and shot guns that are not very powerful or noisy. The granades are very ordinary and not as damaging, so it takes some serious strategy to subdue an opponent. I've found the "camping" is more of a staple in World at War -- in fact, a rudimentary grenade launcher could be one of the game's more effective weapons, especially if you find a pack of guys coming your way. The graphics in this game are above average. I love the differing environments. Even Kiefer Sutherland's voice encourages you to fight harder and never give in at the same time -- epic. Overall, despite its minor lag during on-line play, this game is just as much fun as the other Call of Duty games on the Wii. I got this game cheap (under $15) and so it was a no-brainer to try this one out. I am very happy with the purchase.Read full review
Rented this from blockbuster first. At first, tried the zapper control scheme (we have two nyko perfect shot guns) and got frustrated at how hard the game was to play this way. Then next day we tried the default control scheme and learned to really appreciate the game. The campaign is exciting, online play is fun and has lots of options. The only con I can think of is that the second player isn't as involved in the game as the first, but it's hard to think of a way this could be better. So in short, at first this game can seem really hard (especially if you are used to the more 'casual' wii games or on-rails shooters) but once you get used to it and find the right control scheme it is a lot of fun. Can't wait for the game to get here so we can continue playing.
I love the smell of Molotov Cocktails in the morning...er, um. I mean, if you liked the other Call of Duty games, you're pretty much guaranteed to enjoy this one. World at War is a great first person shooter for the Wii gaming system. The game play bounces from Japanese to Russian layouts, and there is a good variety of weapons and terrain to engage in fierce WWII combat. It takes a little while to get comfortable with the controls, and button layout, but after getting accustomed to it, I actually prefer the Wii controller layout to any other system controls. The graphics are good... Alright, we all know the graphics on the Wii aren't as sharp or defined as other consoles, but the truth is, it doesn't matter all that much to me and it doesn't take away from the game experience. The game itself is pretty action packed. There aren't many places where you're not blasting away at your enemies, and the places you're not blasting away are just brief pauses between firefights to let you catch your breath and take inventory of your ammo and weapons. I like this game because it's hard. Let me explain. There are many games where you just run in, blast away at everything that moves, and roll on. This isn't one of those games. You have to use your head. If you just try to charge the enemy soldiers and mow them down with your Thompson submachine gun, you're in for a rude awakening. I believe the phrase is, "Homie don't play that." The AI enemies are pretty good at taking cover, and swarming you in a torrent of gunfire when you do something stupid. Online play is equally entertaining. Team Deathmatch and Free for All games can host up to 8 players, and it should be noted that on the Wii, Online play is free. Completing weapons challenges rewards the player with weapon upgrades, additional perks, and new weapons to master. The game isn't perfect, however. Accurate fire is literally hit or miss, no pun intended, in story mode (not nearly as bad in Online Multiplayer mode). Even with a stationary target and an optic site, be expected to take more than one shot. But Online play isn't without its problems. There aren't as many online maps to play as their are on other systems, and while online play is free, expect to lose connection with the server during peak usage. I've noticed that playing a complete round of Free for All late at night is nearly impossible due to losing connection with the game server. Team Deathmatch doesn't suffer as bad, but it's still a problem and very frustrating to lose your game connection in the middle of a match. Also, game size is limited to 8 players, while the 360 version of this game offers double the number of players in a single game. Speaking of multiplayer, I'm still confused as to the Call of Duty team's decision to cut out single system multiplayer- you and 3 friends playing against each other on a single system. You can have an online private match, but I would still like to have a local system multiplayer option. Overall, this is a great game that offers a lot of bang for the buck. It isn't a perfect game, and online play is somewhat limited when compared to other systems. But don't let that stop you from enjoying a classic game. If you have a Wii, and enjoyed other Call of Duty offerings, you're sure to enjoy this one.Read full review
We have Call of Duty 3 and my husband has went through the game about 5 times. He saw this game on ebay and in comparison to store prices was a pretty good deal. The game is a little harder than the previous version, which is good, but the language is the same. In our opinion there is too much unnecessary profanity. This probably wouldn't be a problem for some people, but we have kids and try to expose them to as little bad language as possible. Our solution was to either mute it or turn the volume really low if he needed to hear what was being said. A really easy fix. Even with it being slightly harder, he beat the whole game in about a week and a half (approximately 15 hours of play, he didn't play every day and only about an hour or so on days he did play). As I am typing this my husband just found out that you can adjust the graphic content setting (would have been nice to know BEFORE he went through the entire game). Oh, well, you live and learn I guess. Hope this helps someone interested in the game.Read full review
**Warning**...turned this game on with my 5 year old son sitting by me. Game comes set with language and graphic content ON, not off. First scene was very graphic and before I could even shut it off, they dropped the "F" bomb. Doesn't need this stuff included to be a good game. After changing the settings, I continued to play without my son there. Need to get a Zapper, only have a handgun for Wii. Should make things much easier hopefully. Gameplay is good, graphics are good and senerios are pretty cool. Much different to play than on other systems, but really neat once you set the controls the way you want them and learn to use the gun. Lang. and graphic content b/w gameplay scenes are the drawbacks for me.
I bought this game since I haven't experienced any first WWI person shooter WWII on the Wii. I was impressed with the storyline, sounds effects, details, dialogs, etc. The graphics is fine but not par to PS3. By playing the game it makes you feel like you're really part of the war. For a Wii game this is probably on of the most addicting games out there. For the drawback. I wish they could improve the graphics to be more realistic and not cartoon like, and also to make the story longer. The knife stabbing move was also hard to do when you are shot or stabbed by one of the Banzai fighters. Overall, I liked the game and it is a must have for COD and war game fans. I hope they could put up a game where you can play part of the AXIS or Nazi and Imperial Japanese soldier. So, you can play both sides and know different sides of the war.Read full review
Graphics are pretty good for this type of game on this system. Didn't think it would be as good with the previews online, but playing it on the actual system and tv screen, it's smooth. I bought it cause I heard this game was pretty fun on the other systems. Thought I'd try this out with the wireless Wii-mote. Camera view is sensative, but you can adjust it to your liking. Game play is sort of hard on normal. So if you haven't played this game yet, not used to playing these types of games, start on easy. But pretty much this game is a fun game to play.
This is a good game, great for the Wii, but of course not up to par with HD graphics of the 360. The Zapper makes it unique, though. The game is tough, but not too tough. Also, the Wii version doesn't have the "Zombie" mode after the game is beat, whis is a letdown. Also, the two player co-op isn't split screen, and I think the game would have benefited from a split screen, not just a drop in crosshair. Overall, I give this game an 8/10 with a replay value after a month of 6/10. Once you beat any of the "conflict" games, you tend to not play them much after.
I have a hard time writing a review on this but I can tell you it is definitly for mature audiances. I have a 6 year old and the game should not even be played around someone under 10 years old. I shut the TV off because there was some footage from WWII in there that a 6 year old could not and should not see. I took it out and put it away so no one could play it for at least a few years. The game itself is fun but definitly for mature audiances. Hence the rated M. There needs to be another category at the bottom because I might recommend it to an older more mature person.
