American Engineering AT IT'S BEST
The early postwar Lionel Locomotives are my favorite. They are solid as a rock and well engineered. Some would say over-engineered. Most are still running today. Can we say that about Korean and Chinese manufactured toys made today ! This Steam Engine has a die cast body, die cast trailing truck, Nickel rimmed, highly detailed Baldwin type driver wheels (Not Plastic), and full operating drive and valve link rods. The mechanical smoke unit is synchronized to the wheel rotation. Just a wonderfully designed toy. These early Lionel engines do not yet have Magnetraction, but that just means they run more prototypically. A little wheel spin as it starts pulling a heavy train load is just fun to watch. They are heavy enough to pull a decent consist of freight or passenger cars. Also, they are repairable. Parts are still available. No wonder they are so collectible!
