Reviews
"One of the most illuminating, theoretically informed accounts of popular fiction now available."--Terry Eagleton "A fresh and methodologically pathbreaking look at popular or mass-cultural narrative and its ideological function in a specific formative period of North American modernity."--Fredric Jameson " Mechanic Accents abounds with new ways to think about America's ubiquitous popular culture ... [Denning has] a first-rate intelligence and the generous sensibilities of a cultural modernist and democrat."--Christine Stansell, Voice Literary Supplement "An impressive and excellent book ... removes dime novels from the clutches of nostalgia buffs, returns mass fiction to the workers who read it, and convincingly outlines a fresh paradigm for the study of mass culture."-- Labor History, "One of the most illuminating, theoretically informed accounts of popular fiction now available."-Terry Eagleton "A fresh and methodologically pathbreaking look at popular or mass-cultural narrative and its ideological function in a specific formative period of North American modernity."-Fredric Jameson " Mechanic Accents abounds with new ways to think about America's ubiquitous popular culture ... Synopsis
Mechanic Accents is a widely acclaimed study of American popular fiction and working-class culture. Combining Marxist literary theory with American labor history, Michael Denning explores what happened when, in the nineteenth century, working people began to read cheap novels and the "fiction question" became a class question. In a new afterword, Denning locates his study within the context of current debates on class and cultural studies., Mechanic Accents is a widely acclaimed study of American popular fiction and working-class culture. - h***r (11)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseItem arrived within expected window of delivery. It was packaged in such a way so that item would not damaged during shipping. Item was actually better than described in eBay ad. It had been described as "Very Good," but it actually could be described as "Fine," "NOS," or "Like New," because it looked like a brand new copy! Great value for the price. Very happy with my purchase experience with this seller.
- t***a (29)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseThis item was listed as "very good" condition but it should have been listed as "like new" condition. I was very pleased to find the Bible had no writing in it, had a very clean leather cover and in fact looked like it had never been opened. The box was even in great shape on an item from 2013. The packaging could have gotten it to China and back without a scratch. It was shipped the same day as purchase. I love it and am very pleased with this seller.
