Using eBay's point-of-sale (POS) functionality, I was able to message the vendor explaining my error in purchasing and respectfully asking them to refund/credit my account. The eBay prompt explained that the merchant would notify me within 24 hours (or less) if they were able to preempt the sale. In this case they were able and honored my request.
