Hi I have just resaved the Camera its not the 1st I have owned. To me the Ixus 40 were probably the best small compact Camera Cannon Made. They are nice and sturdy solidly built easy to use the controls are easy to use the pictures it produces are great. This Camra for its age is well looked after no scratches on the body the lens works fine when shooting Pictures no problem I have checked the pictures taken and can see no marks or blemishes on the pictures to be honest I have bought a bargain yes its only 4 million Pixels but they print up to A4 without any loss of detail. Its a bargain I love these Cameras easy to carry about for that quick picture that's gone in a seconded never to be seen again. Stuart a happy Chap.

This is an old model now but it's my favourite camera by Canon and they do come up for auction regularly. You can't go wrong with this stylish nearly all-metal camera. Not only does it take fantastic quality images (as do all the PowerShot series) but it's super compact size and fairly light weight makes it a take-anywhere camera that fits comfortable in your pocket. I've seen thinner cameras from Casio, but they're nowhere near Canon in terms of image quality. Features I won't go into all the spec which are well documented, but I will just say the camera has the right balance of manual mode and auto mode, so that those who know about photography (or wish to experiment) can use the manual settings, and those who just want a point-and-shoot camera, can use the auto mode. This camera like all the PowerShot series, has the scenic modes, so you can do portraits, landscape shots etc, and there is a macro mode which takes really sharp and excellent photos. There is a tripod mount as standard, and the camera being all-metal, is very robust, yet light. Time & Date Stamp - Hidden Feature A couple of key features I'd like to mention about this camera are the time and date stamp feature. Not many digital cameras have this feature but it's very useful in some instances. You can enable it by selecting the "postcard" resolution mode. Ideal if you want to gather evidence or just have a time and date printed on your shots at the bottom for reference. Make Arty Videos - Ideal for YouTube The other feature is the video mode. Normally digital cameras do not produce very good quality video and this camera like most others, uses VGA mode, the lowest video resolution. However, surprisingly, you can produce really neat arty videos with this camera, particularly in macro mode! They come out not grainy and are super sharp with nice colours and contrast. It compares favourable to much more expensive HD cameras if you're only shooting videos for YouTube or viewing on small screens (not full-screen TV of course). Battery Life Has Improved Finally, the battery life is excellent for a small camera and these IXUS40's use their own tiny Lithium batteries that work much better than the bigger PowerShot's that run on 2 AA's and just eat batteries up. They also charge up very quickly and since the batteries are so small and cheap, you can buy plenty to have on standby. I use this camera all the time now as my main camera and it's replaced my bulkier PowerShot A550. Although a lesser spec to high end cameras, I find the 3x optical zoom and the 4.0 megapixel resolution is more than enough. The macro lens works very well too. Summary All in all, a superb quality little pocket camera. Grab one if you get the chance. I think you would hard pressed to find a camera with so many features in such a small package, it literally can be worn around your neck or on your belt without noticing the weight.Read full review

Overall - 5 stars Picture - 5 Features - Compact and 'take anywhere' - 5 Size - 5 Value - 4 Batteries can run down quickly with wear but excellent ones are available at low cost and do not have to be Canon.
Launched in September 2004 the stainless steel Canon Ixus 40 is a tiny simple to use camera which has proved very popular with myself and my family. It is one of the smallest cameras in it's class. We have now owned the camera for nearly two years. I wanted a small reliable digital camera that would easily fit in my pocket to take with me almost everywhere and be ready to take a picture in a few seconds. This camera lets me do that. The Canon IXUS 40 is a 4 megapixel ultra slim digital camera with movie mode. It has a good quality sleek metal body that looks good and feels good to handle. It is strong and tough, it has survived many hard impacts without effect. So small I don't have any problem to carry it with me everywhere so I can capture memories. A large 2inch LCD screen with ScratchGard ScreenProtect that makes it much easier to see your composition and review your photos. It has an optical zoom that that is probably one of the biggest for such a small camera design using a 3X optical zoom. The zoom switch is conveniently situated with the shutter button for ease of use and comfort. This Canon would normaly be considered a point and shoot camera but after using you quickly discover it is actually geared towards beginners and experienced photographers to take good, clean and quick shots. This is not a professional camera for professional shots. It is great for quick and casual photography. With typical Canon colour quality, the images are as good as you can get from a compact camera. It has very good presets and modes for indoor, outdoor, landscapes, portraits etc. Macro mode and variable exposure for up to 15 seconds long. Some great image options are there if you want them, "vivid" makes the colours brighter and "B+W or Sepia" effects can be done from within the camera. If you want to tweak things to be a bit more professional then anything you want to tweak can be. The flash is very effective but does cause red eye a little more easily than some other cameras and can be a little too bright with close up items but with a little care using flash or tweaking the exposure in close up situations this can be avoided. Considering this is a camera and not a camcorder the video quality is excellent and stored as MJPEG which is higher quality format than other cameras have using the MPEG codecs. It can do 640x480@30fps and 320x240@60fps as well as others, recording motion with good sound untill it fills your memory card. The camera came with a feeble 16MB SD card so I recommend upgrading to a larger SD card if you plan to take quite a few photographs. A SanDisk or Lexar 1GB SD card is a good all round option for quality and storage capacity. The included software is ok and will suit most needs. It will catalogue your photos and stitch together any panoramic shots that are taken with the panoramic mode. The battery is about the size of a match box and give a long period of use from one charge. I would have found the camera charging facility a little better if it could be charged from within the camera but it has to be removed and charged in a seperate unit that comes with the camera. So in conclusion. An excellent camera. Convenient size, sleek attractive tough metal body, takes great photos and has a great movie mode. Altogether a great cost effective digital camera.Read full review
