It had been a long time since I'd heard a large percentage of this material - and the first hearing for more than half of the 44 tracks on offer within this magical 3 volume 'Best Of' set... It's easy to forget that as the decades have rolled by, 'Hawkwind' became a very influential band in their own right - as well as highly distinctive and original... The fact that the material on disc 3 covering the later part of the 3 decades on show here, is as strong as peak period early 70's tracks covered on disc one - says a lot about the standard of 'Dave Brocks' songwriting and knowing how to get that 'Hawkwind' groove going.... It is indeed a groove that seems to blast forth from many of the tracks. Really nice to hear in fact and a timely reminder of just how good a band they were... Contains loads of classic 'Hawkwind' material from 'Silver Machine' the banned by the BBC 'Urban Guerilla'. Their first single the wonderful 'Hurry On Sundown', as well as 'Masters Of The Universe', 'Psychedelic Warlords' Lemmy's 'Motorhead', 'Spirit Of The Age', 'PSIPower' and 2 tracks from one of my fav Hawkwind Albums 'Levitation' from 1979.... This is a highly recommended package of material - It has a nice informative booklet - with loads of pictures.. With over 4 hours of material included this collection simply couldn't be bettered for under £5 - and should awaken the latent Hawkwind fan within, or be a grand introduction to a whole new generation of fans awating to be born... I saw Hawkwind at 'Monster of Rock'in 1982 and wasn't impressed. However, the sound system at that festival was crap so I knew that the band had not had a fair chance. Over the years I picked up references to a few tracks - Masters of the Universe, Urban Guerilla and Silver Machine - and wanted to hear more; I have always been interested in the link with Motorhead. I bought a shorter compilation but left it in my computer when it went for repair and it didn't come back - rats, what a prat I am. Anyway, seeing this anthology on e-bay and managing to win it at a very fair price I'm back in Hawkwind business. The vendor was impeccable and also gave me good feed back - all good. The album has all the tracks that I had before and some extras. I like the extras, some of them being better than the original tracks. There is hours of music to plough through; too much to take in one go, even if you had nothing else to do. Instead, listen in stages; dip in and out. Listen when ironing, although I find that most music sounds good when you're doing that. Given the recording technology available at the time most of these tracks were made - we thought it marvellous at the time - they are very adventurous, sophisticated and creative - styles vary, which is obviously good when you've got three discs to get through. Some of the musicianship is dodgy at times, but it is endearing. If you're a rock fan and want Hawkwind in one purchase, this is for you.Read full review
Being a great fan of Hawkwind and having purchased many CD's, I found this item at a most agreeable price as when it was first released it did cost around £25. The 3 CD package covers most of the Hawkwind years with some tracks that I have not found on a CD elsewhere and having played the CD, some of the tracks are slightly different that on the original record but it does not detract from the music. Also enclosed is a booklet that tells of its origins up to the late nineties. I consider it a must have to go with any Hawkwind colection.
bought this cd as it covers many years of the band hawkwind with various coming and going of band members over the years, lemmy , bob calvert, etc also has many of their greatest hits on board, would recommend this album to any hawk fans...enjoy
