Hell's Angels by Hunter S. Thompson is an interesting piece of social commentary that is also a very enjoyable book to read. Though it is ostensibly about the time Thompson spent with the Oakland chapter of the Hell's Angels MC in the early 1960s and contains an interesting and surprisingly sympathetic picture of both the group and some individual members, the book is perhaps more interesting in the way it reports the reaction of the media, politicians and the police to the Angels and the way in which this affected both public perception of them and the way they saw themselves. This is an example of Thompson's early writing and is more restrained than his later full blown Gonzo style, it is perceptive and on occasion both disturbing and very funny. As with all his work it pays to be aware that he is first of all a social commentator and not an accademically trained sociologist or social historian but the book is none the worse for this and is an excellent read for anyone interested either in the Hell's Angels MC or the way in which image and mythology is created.Read full review
