There are some types of wall-mounted handrails that you can use. The two main types of handrails are pigs ear and mopstick. Pigs-ear handrails can be securely fastened to the wall without brackets. They sit closely against the wall, which is a nice option for narrow stairwells. Mopstick handrails are secured to the wall by means of brackets, which is a good choice for adding a more decorative handrail.
