Though she can spin wild tales of passionate romance, novelist Joan Wilder has no life of her own. Then one day adventure comes her way in the form of a mysterious package. It turns out that the parcel is the ransom she'll need to free her abducted sister, so Joan flies to South America to hand it over. Only she gets on the wrong bus and winds up hopelessly stranded in the jungle -- until she encounters Jack Colton, a man who could have stepped straight out of one of her novels. Though Jack's good looks and intrepid moves dazzle her, Joan quickly sees Jack for the cheap opportunist that he is. But he's all she's got, so together they journey out of the jungle, battling mudslides, druglords, crazed treasure-hunters -- and each other. Along the way, Joan discovers she's tougher than she ever thought... tough enough to rescue her sister, and tough enough to fall in love with the troublesome Jack.

Very popular comedy adventure is very tame compared with any of the Indiana Jones movies. The suspense is non-existent, the plot has holes you could drive a bus through and a mushy romance is no substitute for Indie-type exploits. Kathleen Turner plays a romantic novelist who has to go to Colombia when her sister is kidnapped by treasure-hunters. Adventurer Michael Douglas helps her out (but their chemistry here is nowhere as effective as it was in War of the Roses) and Danny DeVito is a comical baddie. Somehow the whole thing seems very laboured and dated and the silly ending is pure Hollywood hokum.
Romancing the Stone starred a little known actor called Michael Douglas!
He is wandering around a jungle in south America when he chances upon a female author of a fictional hero character, who has never found her true man, as she aims so high!
Yes, you guessed the rest. But along the way are thrills and spills, and chases through the jungle, as well as several double crosses.
All done with great humour.
Great family entertainment.
nonsense filled romantic action romp, done at its best.
bought it for my fiance after her constant complaints that the film Jewel on the nile (a sequel to this film) was shown reguarly by sky and that her favourite of the two films namely "Romancing the stone" was never shown.
