I bought this scanner to replace an older Canon CanoScan D646U which after about 15 years had worn out. Very impressed with this newer model I like the fact it's powered from the USB rather than needing an additional power supply. This also means unlike the old model the bulb only comes on when the computer is on and the scanner is in use which saves power and bulb should last longer. It's also a bit less bulky than the old model an inch or so shorter so fitted easily into the space I had with plenty of room for the USB lead. I found the drivers and software easy and strait forward to install I didn't encounter any problems even though I'm still using Windows XP on my desktop so I was pleased about that. Generally in operation it works similar to the older model. However it is much faster. As an artist/designer I mainly use it to scan drawings from my sketch books, and whilst I don't need a particularly fast scanner for that job its improved scanning speed also makes it practical to scan other documents such as forms in order to keep business records. The scan to PDF feature is also very useful for this, so it's much more useful than the old model. I suppose my only criticism would be of the bundled "My Image Garden" software. This is basically a bit like Google Picasa in that it catalogues images on one's computer. However unlike Google Picasa it won't display the Canon CR2 raw images taken with my Canon DSLR. Surely one would expect image cataloguing software supplied by Canon to work with their own file formats. However this isn't a big deal since Google Picasa and other Canon software which came with my camera does this job very well and I don't really need more image cataloguing software. But generally I have been very pleased with this new scanner it does the job very well and is a significant improvement on my old scanner.Read full review

Its's a bit slow and the software isn't as user friendly as my last printer.I haven't used all the features as my use for the scanner is just for scanning documents. I like the option to save to PDF's as you can then edit these if you want- not a feature I had on my last Dell printer. I bought this in a hurry when my last printer failed and had a lot of docs to scan in. I'm sure for ordinary home use when you wouldnt have so many to do at one time this would be perfectly adequate for the money.

Great product as you would expect from Canon. I have tested it with a few scans of my photos, with good results. But these are early days, and will need time to find out more about the pros v cons. Advise to future purchasers of this product - I have USB ports on my PC tower both on the front and back panels, but will only work when connected to the port in the back.
