Good range, sharp throughout, auto (on later bodies) or manual focus, reasonably compact and has useful switchable Macro function. Can be used on older Nikon film bodies or modern digital with adapter. Great 'walkabout' lens.

Very sharp lens with good macro facility. The fact it is not VR is not a problem at this focal length provided you keep the shutter speed above 125th sec

Okay, so you'll get better IQ from a 24-120 and more range. But one of those will cost you another £550. With that money you could have the 28-105 as a walkabout lens for web and A4 prints (where nobody will discern the difference), plus a couple of nice fast primes for when you're printing really big and sharpness is crucial. The latter was the choice I made. I've written a 'Real World' review, with sample pictures, which you can find by searching the terms: weebly, 28-105 and doss@yours

I have not tried it on scenes or portraits yet however, the macro is absolutely fantastic. On auto focus in macro mode and normal mode everything is clear and sharp. I do not know why some people complain about shifting from macro to the normal operation and visa-versa, It is easy. May-be they just want something to gripe about. Tony

This lens is amazing , very useful focal range and plenty sharp. The macro mode is great for product shots and anything between normal focal distance and true macro.
