This was Richard's first solo album after his break up with his wife Linda- and what a great album it is. From the uptempo beginning of Tear stained letter this album shouts[and sometimes moans] quality: it includes three of his very finest songs- How I wanted to-a marvellous moody masterpiece Hand of Kindness-a frantic and compelling plea for Love and understanding and the Superb Devonside-a shatteringly Beautiful song in the finest dark Thompson tradition. Honourable mention should also be made of Both ends Burning- A fine racehorse skit The wrong heartbeat-more inverted Love song writing from the Master of the genre and even the cd reissue extra-Where the wind dont whine-a great addition to an all too short Classic. This album lays the foundations for the succession of Great albums Thompson has made over the past 25 years-and would make an excellent introduction to the man and his more recent music. Essential listening.Read full review
