The shield is excellent quality, but is a GSM900A, so you will need to flash the firmware to work in the UK. This is relatively straight forward with lots of tutorials online. Both the flashing tool and various versions of the firmware are free to download. Once it is registered on your network it is really easy to use with the Arduino Uno.

The shield I bought didn't work properly straight out of the box. I found some diagnostic software and discovered that it was unable to detect the sim card. Investigation with a magnifying glass revealed a dry solder joint which I repaired. With that solved, I was then unable to connect to a mobile network. An error code generated led me to find out that the problem lay with the large chip on the board. It is a 900A. This is for use in Asia,. Europe needs the 900 version. I managed to find some new firmware but before I could upload that, I had to solder some header pins to the board. In the end I was successful although I did have to remove the pins again because they come into contact with the usb connector on the arduino. The idea behind buying a shield is so that you can plug and play rather than repair, modify and replace firmware. I've managed some basic testing and it seems to work, hopefully it will have full functionality.Read full review
