I bought this to secure a driving carriage in a horse trailer. I have long struggled with the standard non retractable ratchet, which I have always found quite difficult to open and release the tension on the strap. This one is brilliant, very easy to operate and locks to keep the strap tensioned. It is a pity that it doesn't come with any instructions as I saw one review which said that it didn't work and that the strap didn't remain tight. I had a good fiddle with mine before using it and found out how to lock it by moving it up a click after tensioning so that the strap stays tight. I'm really pleased with it.

I bought four of these Sealey auto retractable ratchet tie down straps to transport a stripped down motorcycle; total weight about 100 kgs. I think they're a great idea as we've all messed around too much with the manual version. However, the combination of the stitching near the hooks and the material used for the straps is not great; checking the straps along route I noticed the stitching was tearing the fabric. I have straps from another brand that do not have this issues (also 25mm). In addition two of the straps had gotten loose. When tightening one of the straps started slipping; i.e. it would tighten to a certain level and then the ratched would skip the teeth and not tighten further. I thought for a second it was a protection against over-tightening, but the others do not have this problem. Please note that the ratchets were used to tie down the motorcycle with the front fork, so when tightening the fork comes down due to the springs in it; the pressure is not enormous. The auto retract feature worked well and taking the strap off is very easy as well as fitting it; the auto-retract feature is a great idea. Downside is that the mechanism is very heavy; that is, it will start to sway in the wind behind a car, so make sure it cannot damage the object you're tying down. Overall for me they're not a success. The main thing a strap needs to do is to securely strap something down; with them coming loose and one not tightening enough I can't use them for transporting a motorcycle. Again note this was a stripped down motorcycle; just frame, wheels and forks. For a normal one I would have used at least 32mm straps. You can consider buying these for strapping a cover over a trailer, but I would advise against using them for a situation where a failure may loosen a heavy object on a trailer.Read full review

At first I wasn't sure if I had made a wise choice or not. However, having now used them to secure my trials motorcycle onto a rack at the back of my car several times I am now totally convinced they are better than my old rachet straps.
