Absolutely brilliant budget travel rod! I bought the Ugly Stik 4 piece travel rod (6’6”) for a trip in March 2020. Needed something to get through an airport in my backpack & this is perfect. Lovely finish to it & feels/ looks top quality for £30. Seems well balanced & paired with my Penn Battle 3 (4000) I’m looking forward to a spot of sea fishing off the rocks. Braid shouldn’t be an issue-20lb Spider braid on my Penn. It feels indestructible & all 4 sections fit together perfectly-just use a 90 degree twist to house the section solidly. It packs to 57cm so is super easy to transport. It does feel a tiny bit heavy but fine for a few hours spinning. Mine came in a plastic case-slightly flimsy but it arrived fine via UK post so I guess it’ll stand up to most things. It has a nifty roll type pouch included that house’s all 4 rod sections individually & then rolls & ties. Feels way better than other rods in its class that I’ve owned. Can’t comment on the cast as yet but I’d say it has a medium/ heavy action (defo not light). Some reviews state that people don’t think it’s particularly straight-mine is totally fine-straight as you get on any cheaper rod. Id say the rod should be fine for most disciplines. If you’re after a solid rod to travel lightly & don’t want to spend a fortune it’s a winner in my opinion. Read full review

I used this rod with a shimano moocher center pin reel and 40lb braid. I have had many fish on this combo so I decided to see if it would handle a tarpon. I hooked a 170lb tarpon at 7 mile bridge in the Florida Keys, it took a large crab, the take was gentle but when I set the hook the fish lept 8ft in the air, then game on. With a reel with no drag and a ''trout rod'' I put the fish under as much pressure as I could. It took about 1hour 45minutes to bring the fish to the boat and touch the leader...............4 times, the fish went all around the bridge stucture and I had a great captain who placed the boat in just the right positions. After the forth time of grabbing the leader to try to unhook the fish the rod exploded!!!! it could not take any more. I have since got another one as I always have it with me, next up for it are the rooster fish in PanamaRead full review

Shakespeare has been around a long time. They equipment isn't as pretty as some of the other brand names out there. But it is more robust, And you will find you are getting good value for your money. This ugly stick.. hmmm yeah true its ugly. But try it. It will stand against any of the bigger names out there. Ugly stick is tuff.. dependable.. Affordable.. witch is what is really important. Any rod you can catch fish with. The fish are not bothered if your using sage, shimano or this ugly stick.. Most breakages happen off the water. There are several ways to view it when you break a rod.. That sage cost me £600 or the ugly stick.. I only give £25/£30 for it.. I'll get another one. If you fish the uk, & a lot of sea fishing in the atlantic.. this little ugly stick fits in your case no worries. Its easy throw airports.. It will handle skipjack, wahoo, snapper, grouper, mullet, barracuda, parrotfish these are all in its class. Its defiantly the ideal holiday rod. Read full review

caught small yellowtail tuna with this rod, so its a pretty strong rod. Its lightweight. not really straight but gets the job done. awesome rod for the price and 4 pcs , easy to carry in a bag. Again ,able to take 40 lbs braided line and small tuna of 8 - 10 kg, in the boat in a matter of a few minutes not hours . but of course this rod was not design to take 40 lbs braided and tuna. So very impressive and it won my respect.

Decent, but it's heavy and not so subtle in its action. Probably better suited to big fish!
