Short of converting an older VHS tape of this great film to a DVD format, this purchase is really the only way (or bootlegging it from someone else - I'm referring to "legal means", of course...) to obtain a nice DVD copy of this old B&W movie. My problem, of course, is that here in the good ol' US of A, some A-Holes, obviously more concerned about making a fast buck than doing the right thing (in my opinion), decided many years ago to create "regions" around the globe in which only certain DVD's formatted for those specific "regions" will work with DVD players from that specific region. I'm not the sort of person to go out and buy a "region-free" DVD player (although the prices of these has come down a lot over the last decade) since this situation only occurs for me maybe once every two or three years or so. That said, I took this "Region 2" (the UK & surrounding areas) DVD to a local video shop & had it converted to a "Region 1" (US) DVD format. Keeping the original disc, I now have an excellent "region-1" copy of "The Dam Busters". The extra footage is nice, but the real star is the movie itself, which was based on the true-to-life episodes of Guy Gibson and his 617 Squadron of Avro Lancaster bombers modified to carry the 6,000-lb. cylindrical dam-buster bomb. The film is absolutely superb even with the obviously-dated "special effects", and made even more superbly as much of the original B&W actual bomb drop testing that was caught on film was included. Barnes Wallis, the ahead-of-his-time engineer who designed the bomb - as well as much of his later war-time designs, is superbly portrayed as well. For its time, it's a "solid 10" - a true classic in every sense, and a film that one will never grow tired of seeing! It's that great!!Read full review

I’m old. I remember the Lancasters flying overhead. We counted them going out, and again when they returned and mourned the missing ones. I was 4 years old again watching this film.

Really pleased with this DVD. The film was good, as I expected, and the interviews with the pilots very interesting. Certainly good value.
