good gritty engrossing story of the criminal underbelly. starts with furnishing the reader with a vast array of characters and builds to a thrilling finale
Martina Cole is a very honest, gritty and realistic author, and her novels are very hard hitting, and sometimes not for the faint hearted with her graphic description of violence and sometimes abuse etc, but all of her novels are fantastic and well worth reading, and The Take is no exception. It follows the lives of Jackie, her younger sister Maggie, and their respective partners Freddie and Jimmy, who is Freddie's cousin. At the start of the book Freddie has been in prison and is being released, and Jackie, his wife, cannot wait to have him home. Unfortunately she has forgotten just how violent and nasty he is, and life soon turns from happy to miserable for Jackie, especially as her younger sister Maggie is idolised by her boyfriend Jimmy, and seems to be going places with her life. The book follows their lives over a number of years, during which Jimmy and Freddie work together for a very violent and respected criminal who is still inside prison. Freddie loves the notoriety but its Jimmy who is the brains and soon rises in the world, taking Maggie with him, whilst Freddie is happy to waste all his money and live in a very scruffy and filthy council house. He soon becomes jealous of Jimmy and his lovely wife Maggie, and does something despicable which ends up ruining lives forever..... The Take is a brilliant book, gritty and emotional, and I would recommend it to fans and new readers of her material alike.Read full review
