Based on both the short story by John W. Campbell, Jr. and the 1951 film produced by Howard Hawks, THE THING is John Carpenter's stunning masterpiece of horror. A group of weary scientists enduring the winter in an isolated camp deep in Antarctica chance upon an alien spacecraft buried in the ice. Near the strange craft is the body of an alien being, frozen solid. Thinking they have made the find of a lifetime, the scientists bring the alien body back to camp and thaw it out. The alien awakens, not in the best of moods, and proceeds to take over the identities of the scientists, one by one, body and all. Helicopter pilot MacCready (Kurt Russell) must lead the surviving men in discovering who among them is human and who is not and how they can destroy "the thing" before it takes them all and moves on to the heavily populated mainland and the rest of humanity. Rob Bottin supplies the awe-inspiring special effects of the creature in its many, ever-changing forms. The effects were groundbreaking at the time and hold up flawlessly over the passing years. But Carpenter does not rely solely on special effects, utilizing his spectacular cast, which includes Wilford Brimley and Richard Dysart, to create three dimensional characters enduring an unthinkable situation. The score from Ennio Morricone is understated, yet increases the tense mood tenfold. Shooting was difficult and done in below freezing conditions, but despite the discomfort the cast and crew produced a truly terrifying film that will stand the test of time. THE THING is surely one of Carpenter's definitive films and a true horror classic.

The Thing (1982) Blu-Ray = A fine presentation

This review is for "The Thing (1982)" Blu-Ray. I won't attempt to review the film itself, as this will be served better elswhere. I will just concentrate on the disc itself. Way back in 1999, this was one of the first DVDs that I purchased. It was a great way to see the film again, as I had only seen the (horrible) 'pan & scan' version on Tv and video. It was presented widescreen 2.35:1 and loaded with extra features. However, being an early Universal DVD region 2 release, and 'non anamorphic' transfer it meant that the picture was 4:3 'Letterbox'. This meant that the picture appears as a rectangle in the centre of the screen. Not good. Anyway, on to the Blu-Ray... This is an excellent 1080p transfer, shown in it's original aspect ratio. There is a lot of fine detail in the picture, considering the film's age. The snowy landscapes are reproduced very well, as are the interior and night scenes. The audio is equally impressive, in English DTS-HD Master Audio with additional languages available. These being : French, Italian, German and Spanish. There is also an informative commentary with Director John Carpenter and Star Kurt Russell. Optional subtitles are avcailable in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portugese and Traditional Mandarin. There are plenty of bonus features too, including a feature length documentary, production archives, location design, outtakes, photographs, artwork and a trailer. Pretty much all you need to know about the film is included here. I would recommend this to any sci-fi, horror and suspense fan who hasn't seen it. It also shows that real special effects, modelmaking and great acting combined make films like this far more enjoyable than the boring CGI stuffed films of today... In the winter of 1982, a twelve-man research team at a remote Antarctic research station discovers an alien buried in the snow for over 100,000 years. So happy!

This has been my favourite film for years now, it was my introduction to the world of horror, and what an introduction it was! So to have a mint condition, uncommon edition of the film makes me very happy. Hard to come by but if you can find it, it's worth every penny

the transfer we always wanted.The Thing at it's Very best.

The Thing.Blu ray the 1985 Kurt Russell film.Oh yes,this it.The diffinitive version.At last given the aspect ratio to watch a big picture.Instead of the narrow band with massive black lines above & below of DVD versions.Blu ray gives perfect picture & DTS MA 5-1 sound. If you love this film,which i do,it's among my ALL-TIME favourites.Buy it. Highly recommended.
