Neil Young Trans- Transformation
Years ago I bought Neil Young's Trans on LP . I finally broke down and paid for it in disc form. I must say that I couldn't wait to hear Neil sing " Iwant a unit to sample and hold" but -- oops -I never got it from record village UK! So I'll finish this review when I do receive it. Of course I know this really doesn't meet your guidelines but since pay pal is also not helping, well you know how I feel.Years ago I bought Neil Young's Trans on LP . Futuristic Title and album cover
This is a step or two outside of the normal Neil Young album. At this time in his life, Neil was experimenting with synthesizers and weird sound altering microphones to enhance his voice. I personally love this album. Many avid Neil Young fans do not care for this album because they beleive he sold out and made it disco. This is not a disco album. It is just another attempt to be creative in a new way, as he is known to do. This is a hard to find CD, and will probably only be found on import.This is a step or two outside of the normal Neil Young album. High quality recording with really great mastering to Compact Disc
Wow, Neil's old Geffen days ! The first time I heard the music from this LP (and it was an LP back in the 80's), was a live concert on HBO from West Germany; and I thought it was great music! Neil's work often relects the period; and on Trans, I feel he attempts to tell us about what can be expected on the current path to the future. I had this on tape years ago, and always wanted it on CD. I can say it was worth the wait! This CD is not available in the States, and I was lucky enough to find it available in the UK. The sound quality is excellent; the fuzz guitar is clear, bass response perfect, soundstage is vivid and has depth, and quiet passages. "Like an Inca" is a more tradtional recording, no fancy synth or effects, just good old fashioned drums, bass guitar, acoustic and electric ... Wow, Neil's old Geffen days ! "Like an Inca" is a more tradtional recording, no fancy synth or effects, just good old fashioned drums, bass guitar, acoustic and electric guitars (Nils Lofgren really shines on this song), minor studio voice treatments to the vocal track; and it's all crsytal clear, with fantastic stereo seperation, crisp cymbals, nice midrange for the voice. Tracking is perfect, no reportable problems. The disc is made in Germany by Universal, and was mastered with the assistance of David Briggs, who has had a long history of working with Neil Young. The CD comes with a tri-fold insert that has the lyrics to all the songs ( the original LP had the lyrics on the inner record sleeve) and all the album art is present. "Sample and Hold" is an alternate version which can be found on Neil's Lucky Thirteen compilation, so if you want to hear the orginal version you have to get the vinyl, and I suggest if that's your course of action, seek out the promotional Quiex II limted pressing. I completely recommend this CD; a must have for any dedicated Neil Young fan.
