This album has two songs that are absolute must-haves: "Wild Night" and "Tupelo Honey." The other tracks are pleasant, enjoyable Van Morrison tunes from his Northern California period. However, aside from the two FM staple tracks noted above, many found it a bit of a letdown after "Moondance" and "His Band and the Street Choir," especially as he followed up "Tupelo Honey" with the much more even (and inspiring) "St. Dominic's Preview." We do see Morrison starting to reach down for his Celtic roots with songs like "I Wanna Roo You (Scottish Derivative). But classics like "Wavelength" and "Into the Music" are still a few years off. This is good Van Morrison, but not edgy Van Morrison. It took a long time to produce, and there was more than a touch of "lead guitarist's girlfriend who wants to be in the band" syndrome in evidence (see the hippie old lady shot of Janet Planet on the cover). Not enough to warrant the send-up treatment of "Spinal Tap," but ... So think of this as the mellow side of Van Morrison; fortunately, instead of mellowing into oblivion, he would go on to recharge his batteries and bring the excitement, most notably in the live "Too Late to Stop Now."Read full review
We all know the hits and every song on Moondance, but I've been enjoying discovering the hidden Gems on Van's lesser known albums including this one. Recorded in San Francisco shortly after Woodstock changed the world, it features an all-star cast including Ronnie Montrose and John McFee with perhaps the first use of Pedal Steel in any genre other than county.

Excellent, classic period Van Morrison album. One of his more upbeat and optimistic works, but contemplative as well. The title track is an instantly recognizable classic.
