Current slide {CURRENT_SLIDE} of {TOTAL_SLIDES}- Best-selling in Fire Starters
First off, this is not magnesium, it's a ferrocerrium rod. However people often get them confused so I don't think the seller is being deliberately misleading and it is still an excellent fire starter. The ferro rod is just over 6cm in length including the handle with a striking surface of 3.5cm. It is a solid rod too, not one of the knock offs that are mostly made of different materials with the tiniest of ferro rods glued onto one side. It is coated in a protective paint layer that needs to be scraped off before use. The striker is 7cm and is okay, it's not flimsy like others I've seen. The cord it is on is quite cheap and would fray easily so I would suggest swapping it for some paracord or leather cordage when you get it. The rod composition is softer than some of my other ferro rods. This means it gives off some pretty big sparks but will wear down faster. That said, I would imagine you'd get a least a couple of thousand strikes out of it if not more, and for the price, I think that's an absolute bargain.Read full review

Great item. Ignore those that don't know what a magnesium flint is. To use this correctly scrape the magnesium side gently and make a small pile of dust on your tinder, then strike the flint side on to the dust pile. Magnesium dust ignites very easily and burns very hot so it's easier to start a fire. This isn't a aluminum rod holding a bit of flint as some say. They just are lacking the correct information and usage knowledge.

OK, to start with, it is 99p so don't bother trying to compare with outdoor one's costing upwards of £5 (which I also have along with wax coated extra long matches). This is a nice, simple and straightforward backup and funnily enough, produces lots of sparks which light kindling so all's good. :) The only draw back (if you want to be pedantic) is the magnesium shaft is not all that secure and CAN fly out straight into the newly lit fire so beware. All I did was pull it out, put a drop of glue in and stuck it back on, job done..

It does work and if you look at the picture it is shown but both my other firelighers are full magnesium and this is a cheap compromise.
